SXSW 2014 Goes Wireless with Alpha Omega Wireless, Inc.

Posted on Tue, Mar 11, 2014

Alpha Omega Wireless, Inc., headquartered in Austin Texas, was hired for the forth year in a row by SXSW and RightRound to provide wireless Ethernet backhaul and outdoor Wi-Fi to multiple venues around Austin for the 2014 SXSW Film, Interactive, and Music Festival.

President Joe Wargo says, "We were excited to be asked by SXSW and RightRound to return to help them provide critical bandwidth to their major venues and some outdoor Wi-Fi at select special events. This year we have seen a huge increase in the bandwidth requirements of SXSW and their sponsors. In years past some of the major events only needed upwards of 50Mbps, but now the minimum has been 100Mbps+. This year we have several events that need GigE bandwidth. More and more live streaming is going on this year.

SXSW SAF IntegraOverall, AO Wireless has deployed over 5Gbps+ of carrier grade point to point wireless backhaul and point to multipoint wireless Ethernet bridges. RightRound has brought in multiple multi GigE fiber internet POP’s around Austin that AO Wireless then created the last mile wireless connectivity off the fiber to the venues. I was amazed on how much redundancy that RightRound has created this year.

This year because of the high bandwidth requirements we expanded multiple point-to-point wireless backhauls to concert venues and outdoor event locations. We had to use more point-to-point microwave links, rather than using traditional point-to-multipoint wireless Ethernet bridge systems because of the amount of unlicensed wireless interference. Other major accomplishments this year was providing high speed Wi-Fi, to some high profile, outdoor party events and outdoor meeting events. For the outdoor Wi-Fi applications we used Xirrus Wi-Fi array systems in order to handle the high density of Wi-Fi users and devices.

This year we used a wide variety of radio systems ranging from Xirrus for the high density Wi-Fi and Proxim, Radwin, Exalt, Siklu, and SAF Tehnika for our outdoor wireless Ethernet bridges. We used a lot of 24GHz point-to-point microwave radio links for our mission critical wireless backhauls. The SAF Lumina 24GHz radios help us avoid wireless interference and provide us 366Mbps full duplex (732Mbps aggregate) throughput. The advantage of these wireless frequency platforms was to help avoid interference. Plus they could be deployed immediately under FCC regulations. We even introduced the new SAF Integra radio for our most important venue.

Deploying wireless around Austin during SXSW can be very challenging. There is a lot of people that deploy unlicensed, value line, radio systems and outdoor Wi-Fi around Austin for some of the events. AO Wireless’ challenge was to deliver 99.999% reliable wireless backhaul to SXSW and RightRound clients.”

AO Wireless Deploys Xirrus Arrays at SXSW for High-Density Wireless

Posted on Fri, Mar 08, 2013

Wi-Fi Arrays to Serve Densely-Packed Event Venues With 3,000 Attendees -- Each Toting, on Average, Two Mobile Devices -- and Will Allow Seamless Roaming

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwire - Mar 8, 2013) - Xirrus®, the leader in high-performance wireless networks, and Alpha Omega Wireless, an integrator of broadband wireless network technology and complete end-to-end wireless backhaul solutions, today announced that the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference, a premier showcase of original music, independent films, and emerging technologies, will use Xirrus Wi-Fi arrays to provide wireless coverage at SXSW 2013. IT staff for the event, to be held March 8-17 in Austin, Texas, will deploy Xirrus Arrays across mission-critical event venues to provide comprehensive reach and coverage for attendees. Event organizers predict that attendees will carry, on average, two mobile devices each, including smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

Working with Xirrus partner Alpha Omega Wireless, SXSW first deployed Xirrus Arrays for high-density venues at its Interactive Kickoff Party in 2012, supporting up to 2,000 mobile devices simultaneously and accommodating the surging demand for wireless social media communications at the event.

Xirrus SXSW

Xirrus Arrays use multiple AP's with sector antennas to distribute Wi-Fi signals, in much the same way as cellular antennas, allowing for maximum output and better RF channel control. Further simplifying the wireless architecture, Xirrus Arrays operate at both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, allowing SXSW site planners to map mobile devices with 802.11a 5GHz capability onto the 5GHz wavelengths, reducing demand for 802.11b/g 2.4GHz service. Virtually all second-generation mobile devices are designed for optimum operation at 5GHz.

Xirrus Wi-Fi Array

"Each Xirrus Array has its own integrated controller, eliminating the costs and architectural complexity of using centralized Wi-Fi controllers," said Joe Wargo, president of Alpha Omega Wireless, who managed the infrastructure site plan in tandem with SXSW's IT staff.

Creating Xirrus-based hotspots proved to be a routine, reliable approach to adding bandwidth virtually on demand. Xirrus Arrays house up to 16 AP's, simplifying network architecture by allowing a single Array to replace many discrete AP's. Now, with the ease of provisioning a series of Xirrus hotspots, IT staff for SXSW will be equipped to establish seamless roaming within major venues at the event, eliminating the need for attendees to manually reconnect at each event venue.

SXSW has expanded to blanket virtually the entire city of Austin with its presence. Event officials said that wireless mobility has become even more critical in ensuring a dynamic, media-rich experience for its staff, performers, and attendees. "SXSW has grown beyond all predictions, and wireless service must provide visitors the wired-like experience they enjoy today, but without the complexity and high cost," said Scott Wilcox, Director of Technology for SXSW.

"Scaling the infrastructure for an event with the hyper-growth of South By Southwest can create many unforeseeable demands," said Steven Wastie, VP of Marketing for Xirrus. "But in scaling the vital communications infrastructure to support one of the music industry's most heralded events, nothing can be left to chance. We gratefully acknowledge the trust that South By Southwest has placed in Alpha Omega Wireless and Xirrus."

AO Wireless President Joe Wargo Speaks at SXSW on Wireless

Posted on Sat, Feb 02, 2013

Alpha Omega Wireless, Inc. President, Joe Wargo, will be a featured speaker at the 2013 SXSW Interactive. Joe will be speaking to an audience, on Saturday March 9th from 9:30AM to 10:30AM at the Austin Convention Center (http://schedule.sxsw.com/2013/events/event_IAP15797) about wireless networks at large events and venues. Some of the topics will be about how to design, prepare, and deploy wireless backhaul and Wi-Fi networks for high-density crowds in large venues. Wireless technologies that will be covered are point to point wireless bridges, to include licensed microwave backhaul and use of unlicensed point to point wireless bridges, microwave communications, point to multipoint wireless Ethernet bridges, WiMax, and wireless mesh networks. He’ll also cover successful design and deployment of high density Wi-Fi, both indoor and outdoor Wi-Fi.

Joe Wargo SXSW

President Joe Wargo says, “I am very excited to be speaking at this year’s SXSW Interactive. Alpha Omega Wireless has been working with SXSW for several years to enhance their network reach using wireless backhaul and Wi-Fi. SXSW uses wireless backhaul and Wi-Fi for their own internal network for video and music streaming, point of sale, registration and overall operations, as well as providing Wi-Fi connectivity to attendees at various venues and events. Interactive is a perfect place to talk about how to design and deploy wireless technology for large events and venues since there will be a live example to show and talk about. Interactive has become a technology showcase to the world even extending past music and film. Deploying successful wireless networks for large capacity crowds, especially outdoors, is challenging. Each year we see more and more Wi-Fi enabled devices being carried by people. In many cases the ratio is two devices per person, with the use of tablets and smart phones. Done right though it enhances the attendees’ experience. “

Alpha Omega Wireless Provides Wireless Backhaul at SXSW

Posted on Tue, Mar 13, 2012

Austin, TX - March 13th, 2012

Alpha Omega Wireless, Inc., headquartered in Austin Texas, was hired for the second year in a row by SXSW to provide wireless Ethernet backhaul and outdoor Wi-Fi to multiple venues around Austin for the 26th Annual SXSW Film, Interactive, and Music Festival.

SXSW2012

President Joe Wargo says, "We were excited to be asked by SXSW to return to help them provide critical bandwidth to their major venues and some outdoor Wi-Fi at select special events. SXSW really goes out of their way to make the entire SXSW Festival an amazing event for all who attend. Over the years they have seen a huge increase in demand for internet bandwidth by its participants. Most everyone is carrying an IP enabled wireless device. SXSW just couldn't rely on the carriers to provide the bandwidth that's being demanded.

We were able to deploy carrier grade, full duplex, point to point microwave links to several large venues allowing SXSW to provide bandwidth where they needed it most. For this project we used a combination of high capacity radio systems like SAF 24GHz Lumina radios and 70GHz Siklu radios. The advantage of these wireless frequency platforms was to help avoid interference. Plus they could be deployed immediately under FCC regulations.

This year we also expanded multiple point to multipoint wireless backhaul to concert venues and outdoor event locations. AO Wireless Becomes Gold Certified Partner of Xirrus

Posted on Wed, Dec 29, 2010

Alpha Omega Wireless, Inc. announces it will be expanding its product and solutions offerings by partnering with Xirrus, Inc. a world leader in Wi-Fi product solutions. AO Wireless will become a Gold Level Partner with a high level of commitment to the partnership. Xirrus Gold Level Partners have in-depth Wi-Fi knowledge, market expertise, and the ability to provide full customer support.

Xirrus Wi-FiPresident Joe Wargo says, "We are excited to expand our offerings in the indoor wireless network solutions by partnering with Xirrus. We have a long history of providing effective and reliable wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) networks. Xirrus is an industry leader in the Wi-Fi market space and is by far the most innovative. We have evaluated all the major Wi-Fi systems in the market today and believe Xirrus is far ahead of the curve in technology and quality. Many of the major Wi-Fi players offer the same thing, only with just a few unique proprietary differences. None of them are doing anything revolutionary. Xirrus has revolutionized the Wi-Fi industry and has future proofed their platform. After spending time at their facility it is apparent they have an amazing product. One that I would be proud to say it’s the only solution I would consider for my own network.

Xirrus has figured out how to deal with the high density use of Wi-Fi we are experiencing. As we move forward we are seeing more and more mobile devices being used in the network environment. Laptops, smart phones, tablets, VoIP phones, etc. Years past it was all about coverage with Wi-Fi. Now it’s all about density coverage. Other standard controller based systems can create good coverage in an environment with a few client devices, but when you have high density usage they fall short on performance. Xirrus has solved that issue and by far outperforms ever other system out there.”

About Xirrus Inc.
Xirrus, Inc., the only Wi-Fi Power Play in the industry, manufactures the High Performance Wi-Fi Array, which is the only fully distributed, dense radio Wi-Fi architecture available in the industry today. The innovative Xirrus architecture delivers unmatched RF innovation and wireless performance on a per access point and system-wide basis. It also accelerates the Time-to-Value by 3X by requiring far fewer devices, switch ports, cabling and less time along with less effort and time to implement and maintain than traditional offerings. Xirrus designs and manufactures its products in the USA and is Wi-Fi Alliance, VeriSign, PCI, FIPS 140-2, and ISO 9001:2008 certified. For more information, please visit www.xirrus.com.
